Charlotte’s metropolitan area is home to seven Fortune 500 companies, including Bank of America, Honeywell, Nucor, Lowe’s, Duke Energy, Sonic Automotive, and Brighthouse Financial, reflecting the city’s diverse and robust economic landscape. The city is also a central hub for the U.S. motorsports industry. Charlotte houses Haas F1, the only American Formula One team, multiple NASCAR offices and teams, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and the Charlotte Motor Speedway in nearby Concord. Approximately 75% of NASCAR teams, employees, and drivers are based in the region, and the zMAX Dragway NHRA facility attracts top professional drag racers to Charlotte.
Charlotte has established itself as an energy sector leader, earning the nickname “Charlotte USA – The New Energy Capital.” The region hosts more than 240 energy-related companies employing over 26,400 people. The University of North Carolina at Charlotte supports the sector with its Energy Production and Infrastructure Center (EPIC), which trains engineers and conducts cutting-edge energy research.
In addition, Charlotte has become a growing tech hub. The information technology industry, supported by corporate, academic, and research initiatives, continues to expand, drawing startups and established firms to the city.
Logistics and transportation are also major drivers of Charlotte’s economy. The city’s strategic location near Interstates 40, 85, 77, and 95 and within a 650-mile radius of 53% of the U.S. population has made it a thriving trucking and freight hub. Major logistics companies operating locally include FedEx, XPO (and its spin-off RXO), Red Classic, Armstrong Transport Group, Maersk North America, Zenith Global Logistics, Cargo Transporters, Southeastern Freight Lines, Distribution Technology, and Transportation Insight LLC. These companies collectively employ thousands of workers, contributing to Charlotte’s regional and national distribution networks.
With its combination of financial institutions, Fortune 500 companies, motorsports, energy, tech, and logistics industries, Charlotte has developed into one of the most dynamic and diversified economies in the United States, attracting talent, investment, and businesses from across the nation and around the world.
