European settlement began in 1803 with a brief British penal outpost at Port Phillip, then part of New South Wales. Melbourne itself was established in 1835 by free settlers from Van Diemen’s Land (modern-day Tasmania) and officially incorporated as a Crown settlement in 1837. Named after the UK Prime Minister, William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne, the city was declared a city by Queen Victoria in 1847 and became the capital of the newly separated Colony of Victoria in 1851.

Melbourne flourished during the Victorian gold rush of the 1850s, growing into one of the wealthiest and largest cities globally by the late 1880s. Following Australia’s federation in 1901, Melbourne served as the interim national capital until Canberra assumed the role in 1927. Today, the city blends its rich history with modern urban life, offering residents and visitors a dynamic mix of culture, commerce, and heritage.

Melbourne has played a pivotal role in shaping Australian culture, giving rise to Australian rules football, Australian impressionism, and Australian cinema. It is also renowned for its live music, theatre, and street art scenes. Major international sporting events, including the Australian Grand Prix, the Australian Open, and the 1956 Summer Olympics, highlight its global sporting significance. Melbourne frequently ranked as the world’s most livable city during the 2010s, reflecting its high quality of life.

Transport and connectivity are central to Melbourne’s infrastructure. Melbourne Airport is Australia’s second-busiest, while the Port of Melbourne is the nation’s busiest seaport. The city’s transport network includes the main metropolitan rail hub at Flinders Street Station and the regional rail and coach terminus at Southern Cross Station. Melbourne also boasts the most extensive freeway network in Australia and the largest urban tram network in the world, making it both a major transport and logistics hub.

This blend of Indigenous and colonial naming, along with the city’s distinctive pronunciation, highlights Melbourne’s layered cultural heritage and enduring connection to both its traditional custodians and its modern urban identity.

In June 2021, the Victorian Aboriginal Heritage Council formally agreed on boundaries between the lands of two traditional owner groups, the Wurundjeri and Boonwurrung. The boundary stretches across the city, placing the CBD, Richmond, and Hawthorn on Wurundjeri land, while Albert Park, St Kilda, and Caulfield lie on Boonwurrung land. However, these boundaries remain disputed by some community members, including N’arweet Carolyn Briggs.

The city is widely referred to as “Narrm” by Aboriginal communities, a name derived from the Boonwurrung word for Port Phillip Bay, Narm-narm. In Eastern Kulin languages, Narrm means “scrub,” reflecting the Creation Story in which the Birrarung (Yarra River) filled the bay. Before this event, the area that is now Melbourne was dry land, with scrubland supporting wildlife such as emu (boorrimul) and kangaroo (marram). This deep connection to land and story underscores Melbourne’s enduring Indigenous heritage.

In May and June 1835, John Batman, a member of the Port Phillip Association in Van Diemen’s Land, explored the Melbourne area. He later claimed to have negotiated the purchase of 2,400 km² (600,000 acres) from eight Wurundjeri elders. The treaty, however, is widely disputed, as communication barriers meant the elders likely viewed the exchange as a tanderrum ceremony, granting temporary access to the land rather than a permanent sale. Batman identified a site on the northern bank of the Yarra River as ideal for settlement. In August 1835, a group of Van Diemenian settlers arrived, establishing a settlement near today’s Melbourne Immigration Museum, and Batman’s group joined them the following month. The settlement was initially known by the Indigenous name Dootigala.

Batman’s treaty was annulled by Richard Bourke, Governor of New South Wales, with compensation paid to members of Batman’s association. In 1836, Bourke designated Melbourne as the administrative capital of the Port Phillip District and commissioned the first urban plan, known as the Hoddle Grid, in 1837. The settlement, briefly called Batmania, was officially named Melbourne on 10 April 1837, after the British Prime Minister William Lamb, 2nd Viscount Melbourne. That same year, the city’s General Post Office opened under the new name.

The early years of Melbourne’s European settlement were marked by the dispossession of Victorian Aboriginal groups. Between 1836 and 1842, Aboriginal people were largely removed from their lands, including through directives by Superintendent Charles La Trobe and actions such as the mass arrests of 1840, known as the Lettsom raid. Despite this, many Indigenous people continued living near the settlement, with hundreds residing in makeshift camps by 1844. Attempts to protect Aboriginal communities, such as the appointment of Aboriginal Protectors in 1839, were undermined by colonial land policies favoring European squatters.

By 1845, a small number of wealthy Europeans controlled almost all pastoral licenses in Victoria, consolidating political and economic power. Letters patent issued by Queen Victoria on 25 June 1847 officially declared Melbourne a city, and on 1 July 1851, the Port Phillip District separated from New South Wales to form the Colony of Victoria, with Melbourne as its capital.

The Eureka Rebellion of 1854, in which miners of at least twenty nationalities protested oppressive mining conditions, led to widespread political reforms, improving labor rights across mining, agriculture, and manufacturing industries. The gold rush also fueled an era of grand civic construction. Between the 1850s and 1860s, the city saw the commencement of iconic landmarks such as Parliament House, the Treasury Building, the Old Melbourne Gaol, Victoria Barracks, the State Library, University of Melbourne, General Post Office, Customs House, Melbourne Town Hall, and St Patrick’s Cathedral, many of which took decades to complete.

Urban planning in the inner suburbs adopted a one-mile grid, intersected by wide radial boulevards and parklands. Terrace houses, detached homes, and grand mansions quickly filled the area, while major streets developed as commercial hubs. Melbourne emerged as a major financial center, hosting banks, the Royal Mint, and Australia’s first stock exchange in 1861. Sporting and cultural institutions flourished: the Melbourne Cricket Club acquired the MCG in 1855, Australian football was codified in 1859, and the inaugural Melbourne Cup took place in 1861. The city’s first public monument, the Burke and Wills statue, was unveiled in 1864.

Even after the gold rush waned by 1860, Melbourne continued to grow through gold exports, agricultural trade, and a protected manufacturing sector. Extensive railway networks connected the city to surrounding regions, and construction of major public buildings, including the Supreme Court, Government House, and Queen Victoria Market, progressed through the 1860s and 1870s. The central business district filled with shops, offices, workshops, and warehouses, while fine townhouses lined Collins Street. Meanwhile, the Aboriginal population suffered a catastrophic decline of approximately 80% by 1863, due to introduced diseases, frontier violence, and land dispossession, marking a tragic chapter in the city’s history.

The city’s opulence earned it the nickname “Marvellous Melbourne,” coined by visiting English journalist George Augustus Henry Sala in 1885. During this period, grand commercial buildings, hotels, banks, coffee palaces, terrace houses, and palatial mansions proliferated. The establishment of the Melbourne Hydraulic Power Company in 1886 enabled high-pressure piped water and hydraulically powered elevators, paving the way for the city’s first high-rise buildings. The radial rail network also expanded, connecting the suburbs to the booming city.

Melbourne’s land boom peaked in 1888, the year of the Centennial Exhibition. However, the early 1890s brought a severe economic collapse as property and finance bubbles burst. Sixteen small land banks and building societies failed, 133 limited companies went into liquidation, and construction virtually ceased until the late 1890s. The financial crisis contributed to the wider Australian economic depression of the 1890s and the 1893 banking crisis, leaving a lasting impact on the city’s economy.

At the time of Australia’s federation on 1 January 1901, Melbourne became the temporary seat of government for the new Commonwealth. The first federal parliament convened on 9 May 1901 in the Royal Exhibition Building before moving to the Victorian Parliament House, where it remained until Canberra was established as the permanent capital in 1927. The Governor-General resided at Government House in Melbourne until 1930, and many major national institutions continued to operate in the city well into the 20th century.

During World War II, Melbourne played a strategic role by hosting American military forces engaged in the Pacific campaign against Japan. The government requisitioned key facilities, including the Melbourne Cricket Ground, for military use, highlighting the city’s continued national importance.

Significant changes to the city’s skyline began in 1958 with the construction of ICI House (later Orica House), which marked the end of strict height limits in the CBD and the beginning of Melbourne’s era of skyscrapers. Suburban expansion accelerated, supported by the development of indoor shopping centres, including Chadstone. The post-war era also brought a major renewal of the CBD and St Kilda Road, modernising much of the city. Many older pre-war buildings were demolished or retained only as facades, while large suburban mansions were either subdivided or replaced.

To counter low-density suburban sprawl, the Housing Commission of Victoria launched controversial public housing projects in the inner city, resulting in high-rise towers and the demolition of existing neighbourhoods. The rise of motor vehicle ownership spurred extensive freeway and highway development, including major projects like the remodelling of St Kilda Junction, the widening of Hoddle Street, and the ambitious 1969 Melbourne Transportation Plan, reshaping Melbourne into a car-oriented city.

Economic growth during the late 1960s and 1970s attracted the headquarters of major companies, including BHP and Rio Tinto, while Nauru’s then-booming economy led to investments such as Nauru House. Melbourne remained Australia’s primary business and financial centre until the late 1970s, when Sydney gradually overtook it.

The city experienced a severe economic downturn between 1989 and 1992, following the collapse of several local financial institutions. The Kennett government, elected in 1992, initiated an ambitious recovery program that combined public works development with a focus on tourism, major events, and sports. Key projects included the relocation of the Australian Grand Prix from Adelaide to Melbourne, and the construction of landmarks such as the Melbourne Museum, Federation Square, Melbourne Convention & Exhibition Centre, Crown Casino, and the CityLink tollway. Strategies also included privatisation of certain services and reduced funding for sectors like health, education, and public transport, reflecting a new era of economic and urban transformation for Melbourne.

From 2006, city growth extended into “green wedges” and beyond Melbourne’s urban growth boundary. Anticipated population projections of 5 million prompted the state government to review these boundaries under the Melbourne @ Five Million strategy in 2008. During the 2009 global financial crisis, Melbourne fared comparatively well, creating more new jobs than any other Australian city and maintaining a high-property market, leading to historically high housing prices and widespread rent increases.

In the 2010s, Victoria’s government initiated major infrastructure projects to reduce congestion and encourage economic development. Key projects include the Metro Tunnel, West Gate Tunnel, Level Crossing Removal Project, and Suburban Rail Loop. New urban renewal zones emerged in inner-city areas like Fisherman’s Bend and Arden, while suburban expansion continued in outer suburbs such as Wyndham Vale and Cranbourne. Middle suburbs, including Box Hill, became denser as apartment living grew more popular. The COVID-19 pandemic severely impacted Melbourne, which experienced six lockdowns totaling 262 days, the longest of any Australian city. This period contributed to a temporary net outflow of residents and a slight population decline between 2020 and 2022. The city stretches northward through the undulating bushland valleys of the Yarra Valley tributaries, including Moonee Ponds Creek (toward Melbourne Airport), Merri Creek, Darebin Creek, and the Plenty River. Coupled with the rise of private automobile ownership after 1945, this led to Melbourne’s auto-centric middle and outer suburbs, characterised by low-density housing. Inner-city areas, by contrast, are medium-density and transit-oriented, while the city centre, Docklands, St. Kilda Road, and Southbank feature high-density urban development.

The city is widely recognised as Australia’s garden city, with Victoria known as the garden state. Melbourne contains an abundance of parks and gardens, both within the CBD and surrounding suburbs, many featuring rare plant species, landscaped vistas, pedestrian pathways, and tree-lined avenues. Outer areas include national parks such as Mornington Peninsula, Port Phillip Heads Marine, Point Nepean, Organ Pipes, and Dandenong Ranges, alongside numerous state parks. Melbourne’s metropolitan area is formally divided into hundreds of suburbs, managed through 31 local government areas. This structure reflects a balance between high-density urban living, suburban expansion, and a commitment to green space, making Melbourne both a modern metropolis and a city celebrated for its natural and landscaped environments.

Melbourne is home to 77 skyscrapers, including Australia 108—the Southern Hemisphere’s only 100-plus-storey building—and the Eureka Tower. Early 20th-century suburban expansion brought Federation and Edwardian styles to areas such as Hawthorn and Camberwell, while Art Deco, Chicago School, and modernist influences appear in prominent CBD buildings, including the Manchester Unity Building (1932) and the Nicholas Building (1926). Cricket was one of the earliest organised sports in Melbourne, with the Melbourne Cricket Club forming within three years of the city’s settlement.
