Home Modifications & Assistive Technology in NDIS Plans
The right environment can make a world of difference for people with disability. Whether it's a modified bathroom, an accessible entryway, or a piece of life-changing equipment, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) helps participants access home modifications and assistive technology that promote safety, mobility, and independence.
At EnableU, we support participants throughout Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs to assess, apply for, and implement the home changes and devices they need to thrive in their own space.
What Are Home Modifications?
Home modifications are changes made to your home environment to reduce barriers and support safe, independent living. These can range from small adjustments to large structural changes, all designed to help participants carry out everyday tasks more easily.
Examples Include:
- Installing grab rails and handrails in bathrooms or hallways
- Widening doorways for wheelchair access
- Installing ramps, stair lifts, or platform lifts
- Modifying kitchen and bathroom layouts
- Automating lights, windows, and doors for easier control
What Is Assistive Technology?
Assistive technology (AT) refers to devices or systems that help a person do things they might otherwise struggle with due to their disability. AT can range from simple tools to complex equipment and includes items that improve communication, mobility, personal care, and household tasks.
Examples Include:
- Shower chairs and toilet seat raisers
- Communication aids (like iPads with AAC apps)
- Mobility aids such as walkers and powered wheelchairs
- Adjustable beds and hoists
- Hearing aids or visual alert systems
How the NDIS Funds These Supports
The NDIS provides funding for both home modifications and assistive technology under “Capital Supports.” To be approved, the item or modification must be considered ‘reasonable and necessary’ to help you achieve your goals and improve your daily function.
EnableU can assist with:
- Occupational therapist assessments to determine what’s required
- Gathering quotes from licensed builders or suppliers
- Supporting your NDIS plan review or funding request
- Coordinating installation with registered professionals
How to Get Started
- Speak with your Support Coordinator or EnableU team about your goals and any limitations at home.
- Book an OT assessment to determine what equipment or modifications are necessary.
- Gather professional quotes to submit to the NDIA.
- Include the recommendation in your plan review or request a plan variation.
- Install your equipment or complete the modifications once funding is approved.
