How Support Workers Assist with Daily Living and Community Access
Support workers play an essential role in helping people with disability live independently and stay engaged with their community. At EnableU, our trained, local support workers assist participants across Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, and other Hunter Region communities with both day-to-day tasks and broader life goals.
What Is a Support Worker?
A support worker is a trained professional who helps participants with a wide range of personal care, life skills, and social activities. Funded through your NDIS plan (typically under Core Supports), they work closely with you to provide services that meet your needs, lifestyle, and goals.
Our support workers help with:
- Getting ready in the morning (showering, dressing, grooming)
- Preparing meals and assisting with eating
- Mobility support and safe transfers
- Light cleaning and household tasks
- Attending medical or therapy appointments
- Participating in social and recreational activities
- Learning life skills like cooking, shopping, or using public transport
Every plan is personalised, so the support you receive is tailored to your goals and preferences.
Promoting Independence at Home
We don’t believe in doing everything for you—we focus on doing things with you. EnableU’s person-first approach means we help you build skills and confidence. For example, instead of always cooking meals for you, we’ll help you learn to prepare simple meals on your own if that’s your goal.
Enabling Social Participation
Staying connected is vital for mental health and overall wellbeing. Support workers help you access:
- Group activities and day programs
- Libraries, art classes, and community events
- Churches, mosques, or cultural centres
- Social outings like going to a café, the beach, or a local show
If you experience anxiety or need help navigating social situations, our team can also coach and guide you through these interactions, helping you feel more confident over time.
Respectful, Culturally Aware Support
EnableU takes the time to match you with a support worker who understands your language, culture, and preferences. We work with CALD communities throughout the Hunter Region and are proud to offer inclusive, respectful care that recognises your values and beliefs.
